I’m fascinated by the way in which we talk about luck. We use it to express envy (“You’re so lucky!”). We use it to explain random positive events and deny ourselves credit and agency (“Eh, it was just luck!,” “What a stroke of luck!” etc). Hell, we even use it as a stand in for sex (“So-and-so got lucky last night!”).
But what does it mean, really?
I believe we make something like our own “luck” by being prepared, being clear on what we want, being persistent and putting ourselves in the best position to succeed. I don’t believe in luck as a force or a random win left to chance.
Today, write about luck, either what you think luck is made of, about a time you attributed something to luck, or perhaps even how you feel about some aspect of the language we use around luck. Let’s go. Good… luck?
