Today, free write about what you fundamentally believe to be true. But then, ruthlessly interrogate all of it, asking yourself, “says who?” and “but why?” until you get down to your own truths. Go deep. “Because I do” isn’t enough in this case; work out why you do.
Set that writing aside for a bit, then return to it with fresh eyes and look at where you arrived on the page—hopefully, to a list of core beliefs completely on your own terms.
What’s the point of that, you ask? Obviously, self-knowledge is important, but, mor practically speaking, zeroing in on core things like this can serve as anchor points and themes around which to build and shape your body of work, and can serve as framing when you want to write about a thing but aren’t sure how to approach it or what point you want to make.
