Adding new layers to build on older writing
Keep adding to and reframing topics to help build out and deepen your body of work
Today, revisit a topic about which you’ve previously written, and consider what (perhaps seemingly unrelated) layer you might add to it to create a new piece that advances that topic in your wheelhouse of things.
For example, say you’ve previously written about a company that makes whatever type of product. Add a historical layer and write about the origin of that product. Or say you’ve previously written about allergen-free cooking. Add a travel layer and write about allergen-free dining options in a particular city. Or maybe you’ve been covering a topic or particular beat as a journalist and want to add an explanation layer and write about how you covered a story or about how to build a source or establish a beat. Build out your existing areas of expertise and experience with layers, over and over, as a path to deepen your body of work, and your own credibility on the topics about which you’ve already written. Let’s go.
