Today, please write about the last time you did something that scared the crap out of you. This could mean having a difficult conversation, opening an intimidating envelope from the IRS or a bill collector, sending an email you dreaded writing, getting a spider out of your house, confronting a stranger who was behaving badly, getting a shot, whatever. It doesn’t have to be the biggest thing that ever scared you, just the most recent one.
If you can’t think of anything that has scared you lately, write about that. If you generally don’t tend to confront a lot of fear, definitely write about that.
Write until you surpass memoir-mode and start to layer in a narrative voice in service to the reader.
Remember, fear is there to protect us, but it really only needs to keep us alive and well; so be on the lookout for clues that fear may be replaying old stories in your head and keeping you small.
