Today, free write without stopping* about things of which you’re ready to rid yourself. Physical things, emotional things, situations, relationships, patterns… whatever. Set a timer for a time limit that feels doable for you today and write without stopping* until the timer goes off.
Then either keep going because you’re on a roll or stand back and read what you just wrote. Add to it if you want. Maybe even take action?! Quit that job, break up with that person, throw out (recycle) the stack of take-out menus, regift that gift you’re never going to use, pick out one tiny habit that will help throw off patterns you’re sick of carrying around with you… you get the idea. Clear it out. Go scorched earth on this stuff and imagine how good it would feel not only to have reclaimed space and time but also how much the process of removing it might be cathartic. Write about that part, too, if you want.
* Why do I always say “write without stopping”…? Let me remind you why: because the moment you pause to fix a typo or think about what to say next, your inner editor steps in and starts messing with you. Outrun that damn jerk as if your life depends on it and make a point to capture not just the well-edited thought but the entire stream of things. Or, as a former colleague used to say: capture the full river of thought, not just the well-constructed raft you’re floating on.
