How do you celebrate things in your life? Today, make a list of ways you’ve celebrated things before and/or what celebration feels like to you, then pick one of those things and write about it.
Or, if you haven’t celebrated yourself as much as you’d like, maybe that’s the prompt, instead.
This is a curious topic to me for a number of reasons, but mainly because I didn’t grow up in a particularly celebrate-your-wins environment (nobody’s fault; just a more utilitarian situation that was more “keep going” than “take a minute",” is all) so it’s something I’ve had to learn how to do (hashtag work in progress). But, it’s also a fascinating topic to me because in our culture that prizes hustle and busy-ness as a means of validation, we aren’t exactly conditioned to stop and luxuriate in our wins, and when we do aim to celebrate them, it feels like we have to pick from flimsy options, usually in the form of product marketing (think the “reward yourself” vibe of chocolate ads, for example) and it’s usually highly gendered.
So, as per usual, I’m joining you in this writing prompt today, and in search of less commercial/more meaningful modes of celebration, too.
