It’s pretty devotedly non-fiction/self-reflection-y here at Writing for Weird Times. But today, let’s go fiction-adjacent and dig into this:
Today, write about a fictional character—from literature, film, tv, whatever—with whom you feel some alignment or aspire to emulate and why. But, dig below the surface and explore why and what exactly fascinates you so much about this character. What does your interest in this character say about you? What stories from your life does it bring up?
There are plenty of characters I love and to whom I feel connected but an enduring one for just about my entire life is Morticia Addams. She’s unapologetically herself, she’s confident, she isn’t frantic and fried; she basks in anticipating her needs being met, she’s straightforward, she has clear boundaries, she’s in her power and centered.
Even as a little girl watching Addams Family reruns, I was like: teach me your ways.
To be sure, there’s a lot I could write about there in terms of what’s modeled to us when we’re young, about families of origin doing their best, and about giving ourselves role models of our own choosing.
Let’s write into all of those things that bubble up.
