Constant notifications are really f'ed up when you think about it
A tiny step to make time for deep, creative work
It’s but a simple task today, done in the spirit of intentionally creating more time for reflection, contemplation and doing deeper creative work (as opposed to putting out fires all day and living in a state of responding and then wondering when you’ll ever have time to write): take a half hour and disable as many notifications on your computer, phone and Slack channels as you possibly can.
And, get acquainted with the Do Not Disturb setting on your phone. Even using it 15-30 minutes at a time does wonders.
Think about it this way: when we all get smartphones, we unwittingly consented to be accessible 24/7 and not only accessible but we also consented to have things come at us on everyone else’s schedule but our own. Reclaim that and, as much as you can based on your life situation, limit intrusions and deal with email and notifications on your own time and terms.
