What do you now know or embody that makes a previous version of you cringe? Today, write about that, but use it as scaffolding to share what you want someone else to know about being in that position and how to overcome it.
Writerly news: Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism has announced a partnership with Agate Publishing (big fan of their work) to publish non-fiction books written by journalists. Jump on this, fam. I know folks at both institutions and they’ll do right by you.
A regular practice I recommend: go to Google News (not just Google, but Google News specifically) and do searches for words around your area of expertise. Today, for example, I started through my usual list of a dozen of so search terms: writer, film, feminism and nothing flipped my lid, but I noticed when searching women, a story about a gym banning women over 24 during peak hours. Does that give me an opening to write about bigger issue around youth-obsessed culture? The pervasive undercurrent that women owe men a youthful, pretty visual? You bet your ass it does. Try this for yourself with the words around your wheelhouse of things and see what sparks.
