As an exercise, write about an area of your expertise…. (and don’t “I’m no expert” me. Everyone has expertise in something; and often we get tripped up on the idea that “expert” means the expert and not an expert, so don’t be afraid of that word. Also, the world uses it whether you rise up to it and claim it or not.).
Anyway, write about an area of your expertise or an issue you know about but that you feel is widely misunderstood or overlooked, and write in such a way that you make the familiar unfamiliar, or the unfamiliar familiar— meaning you explain something that perhaps seems obvious to you but that might not be as clear to someone outside of your field.
Example: explain a harder-to-comprehend aspect of your field of focus and do so by comparing it to something universally familiar. Or, write about a very commonly understood aspect of your area of focus but explain an often misunderstood detail.
Go.
If you like, once you finish, see what needs to be added to it to make it a publishable piece (likely only a timely intro and and a doable conclusion) and pitch that sucker.
