Dropping in at the middle
In media res can be your friend
Write the second paragraph of a piece you haven’t written yet. Skip the opening and all the inclination to set up the story and just drop your reader into the tension. Assume in this paragraph the reader is already with you and focus more on establishing complexity than context.
This exercise pushes us past the “throat clearing” part and forces us to find a sharp entry point, rewarding clarity.
