Today, write about a high-profile crime, but figure out a way to link the crime to something in your own story. It could be a story about going on a blind date with someone who looked like a famous serial killer, something going on in your life the day a major crime was committed, a visit to a crime scene, or, in my case, the story of how my parents bought an actual, literal murder house when I was ten and it was creepy af. Or about the time I got into a minor fender-bender with a guy and soon after saw his face in the newspaper after he was arrested for allegedly murdering a kid.
This isn’t the task of rehashing reporting already out there about a crime, but about using it to frame and personalize a story.
