Today, write the story about something deep, personal and powerful through a specific food. Here’s the way: begin by making a list of 5-10 specific foods to which you have an emotional connection based on an event. Think about foods from your childhood, foods you crave when you’re sick and why, foods that were present during significant moments in your life, foods connected to a specific holiday, restaurants you might have subconsciously avoided because of an awkward conversation you once had there, the terrible cake from your first wedding, whatever. You get the idea. Tease that out for yourself.
Then, select one from your list—likely the one that feels like it has the most energetic baggage around it for better or worse— and write about it. Keep writing until you’ve connected the story with a larger, timely or universal narrative. It’ll come. Let’s go.
