Today, write about what you think about generative artificial intelligence, really. Notice the prompt is not “recite what other people around you have been discussing and speculating about where AI is concerned” but, instead, the ask here is to unpack what you actually think about it, whether or not you think it is in line with popular opinion of your particular group. Take a few minutes and do cursory research about various aspects of it if that helps. Then write. And, even better if, regardless of where you land, you include both useful and detrimental considerations, hopes and fear, wins and dangers already present.
(And, because regular readers know I’m obsessed with not just language but also semantics [see also: definitely this post, but also this post, and, what the heck also this post], I aim to consistently use very clear language on this matter: AI systems are generally about analyzing data and predictive models; generative AI creates new data based on its training data. No part of me wants to be casual and use “AI” to mean all of it.)
