Today, as a way into your writing practice, write about a thing you do that you believe makes the world better, but that you do only for the sake of doing it; not for bragging rights, not to look like a decent person, but the things you do without telling anyone and that you do just for the sake of having done them. Maybe it isn’t a practice so much as a thing you did only one time. Or, write about someone else who does or did a lovely thing that may appear to go unnoticed but that was not.
The very nature of this task might make you cringe and slink away from doing it, especially if writing about yourself, but the idea of doing a giving task purely for the sake of having done it is a powerful one, and one that may lead you to epiphanies about the nature of compassion and giving. And, it might be easy to tell ourselves we are doing things like giving mutual aid and picking up litter without formally volunteering to do so as purely giving, but how does that equation chance if we then post about it on social media? If we tell others? There are no right or wrong answers, just an opportuity to interrogate ourselves or the actions of others. Let’s dig into that.
