All November, we’re focusing on non-fiction writing prompts per usual but through the frame of also taking a good, long look at your writing life and overall creative career things you want to do.
List out creative projects on your near-term horizon. How might they connect (by theme, genre, creative discipline, subject matter, etc.) to your current and recent work?
If you absolutely had to use your current or recent project(s) to build momentum for an upcoming (near-term) ones, what would you do? Think big and creatively here, capture every idea, even if it seems impossible.
This is a tiny slice from an exercise I do with folks I work with. The bigger idea is an activity that reveals themes from our body of work, builds out your expertise/credibility in those areas, connects those themes through to your current projects, and positions your future projects around those themes. It amounts to a pretty iron-clad and cohesive body of work, and it’s especially fun to do this with multi-hyphenate folks and/or folks who have done a lot of very, very different types of creative projects. This is but one pice of the broader activity, but it stands alone pretty well as a way to bolster your body of work and set up your upcoming work to be a bit more visible, even before you’ve finished writing said project.
