Today, write about a moment when you had an experience that would have previously upset you but, this time, you automatically reacted differently. How did you react this time? What was different this time? Had another experience shifted your reaction? Did you go to therapy? What was it?
For example, say money hiccups have always really thrown you for a loop. And, say you found your account overdrawn because all of your bills hit at once or because you tax bill hit or whatever. Where sometime, maybe even not that long ago, you would have had a complete meltdown and felt beat-up and victimized by the whole thing, this time, you just picked up the phone and straightened it out or transferred money in from another bank or borrowed money from a friend. You didn’t freak out, you just acted and handled it.
And, indeed, money can be a tender topic so lets try another, because this could be about anything: maybe you ended a friendship or a quit a job with the neutral confidence of knowing that was the right move instead of second-guessing yourself into a panic attack about it, maybe some family dysfunction threatened to topple your day but you stated your boundaries and moved on. Dig in on this. Dig in on what was different this time and why. Invite messy and true clarity without performance or the pressure of heroic story arcs. Just show up to this sense of personal authority, write, and see where you land today.
