Today, write about the process you follow when you create, and the layers you create at each step. I don’t mean your writing ritual so much as I mean: write about the journey an idea takes (or took, if you want to write about a particular one) from spark to creation. Do you write it on a pad of paper first? Then, do you sketch it out more? Then what? Write about that.
I have this idea rolling around in my mind because I recently saw some personal papers from the now famous hip-hop artists and was able to see hastily jotted-down sparks of an idea, then another paper that was the early iteration of a few lines of now recognizable lyrics, followed by a more formally sketched out song structure, followed by another with drawings in the margins, eventually followed by finalized lyrics, eventually followed by a live gig flyer, eventually followed by notes about a recording session, eventually followed by a contract and cassette tapes then awards. Then, there were footnotes about other songs that have since sampled it.
In the instant I saw it all, I understood the idea for that particular song on a continuum, a spark that took a journey and morphed just a little each time until it became a finished work, then kept going. Today, let’s grab hold of that and write about the journeys our own creative sparks may go on. Let’s write.
