Get in the habit of consuming news and other information with your non-fiction writerly radar churning. By that I mean, simply, as you are reading articles or non-fiction books, or when consuming any type of media, really, get into the habit of asking yourself useful questions to generate ideas from it such as:
What happens or happened after this happened, either in the events of the story itself or in the context of its publication/release. What happened before it happened?
Why did it happen?
Why didn’t X happen instead?
What is this person (subject of article or the writer of it) doing now?
Is someone else doing something similar to this?
Does this thing translate to another industry/subject/problem?
But, perhaps among the most important of questions to ask yourself when consuming information is:
What does my own knowledge tell me is being overlooked or not said here?
How does this information relate to the things I know that I know?
Those last two things can yield important insights to write about and that are often important to share that are specific to your knowledge or experience, giving you a great opening to share it widely.
