New ways to get there
We may believe there is only one way to do a thing, but that's just not true
All November, we’re focusing not only on non-fiction writing prompts but also on your writing output and career.
On November 1, we got into the idea of making a more complete list of your goals. Today, free write around those top creative goals, but with focus on digging deeply into why you want to achieve it. Be radically honest. If “it would validate my ego” or “it would prove my naysaying family wrong” is the answer, name that. But, I also encourage you to keep digging and digging and peeling back layer and layer until you get to the rawest possible truth around each goal.
And then, write about what steps you believe are required to achieve each of your goals. Not what steps are probably required, not a “to do” list, but what steps you believe are absolutely required to get there. Then, ask yourself: how do I know these are the steps? What if these steps were no longer available to me? Then how would I achieve this?
This last part is important because the truth is there is no one true path to anything. And even when people have taken totally different paths, they’ll often still uphold this narrative that the dominant narrative path is the only way. Even when they have personally done it differently!
Thinking about alternative paths to get to the doors you wish to open can help you open up new paths and ideas in your thinking, and help you open to far more possibilities. And maybe one of those possibilities will suddenly snap into focus as being an excellent next step for you. Let’s try.
