We tend to orient ourselves around what we are lacking, because, y’know, capitalism is fun like that. But, today, make a list of where you experience plenty in your life. Do you have plenty of time? Money? Love? Notebooks? Stamps? Pens? Nail files? Set a timer, if you like, and make your list.
When you’ve finished, pick three and pull them together in a piece of writing.
Related, here’s an exercise a very wise therapist once shared with me: she had me look around the room and notice everything green while she silently counted to ten. Then, she had me close my eyes and list everything red in the room. I could only remember one of the red items in the room despite red being the dominant color of items in the room. Mind = blown. There was plenty of red, but I was looking for green so my brain barely even registered the red at all. Take the bigger lesson and see if there are signs of plenty that you may be missing because your brain is searching for other types of confirmation or even the opposite type of information entirely. (In my case, I has just listed all the reasons why I was still too far away from a goal, despite making some pretty significant progress. I was focusing so hard on the distance between where I was and where I wanted to be that all my brain could register was how far away it all seemed, when in fact, it was coming along fine and I was getting wins along the way.)
