Today write about an injustice in the world that tugs at your heart more than others. There’s certainly no shortage of atrocities and systemic injustices we’ve managed to create as humans, but what’s the cause that calls to you so deeply every time? What’s the cause that brings tears to your eyes? Maybe you have more than one, but try to narrow it down to the one or two causes that really get to you the most. (Hint: it’s probably deeply intertwined with your core identity and/or experiences in your early years.) Write about it, unpacking why that particular cause calls to you so clearly, how it manifests in your life’s actions and frustrations, and, perhaps most importantly, what you’re doing to change it.
There’s the idea that saving the world is done all at once, like some superhero punching a comet off its collision course with Earth. In reality, all of us can do something and none of us can do everything so the real way is to do the work we can to make things better according to our passions and skills alongside others who are doing their part, and we each do it but by bit.
I’m reminded of this having recently (finally) watched chef/activist Roy Choi’s “Broken Bread” series and being moved to tears over his exploration of injustices in our food system, a topic that pulls at me almost constantly due to my own life experiences. I know how broken it all is, it’s never far from my mind, and I don’t write about it nearly enough.
Let’s do. Let’s write.
