Since we’re often socialized to believe admitting to naming even our most verifiable, hard-earned, tangible, actual, literal credentials somehow equals bragging, here’s a task for you: imagine the most obnoxious person you know getting right in your face and saying, “Oh yeah? Why should I listen to you?!?”
Free write your answer until you can’t think of anything else with which to back yourself up. Anything you can think of that increases your credibility— degrees, titles, accomplishments, awards, books, and so on. Get good and mad at this imaginary jackass challenging you and really go for it. If it helps, start with, “Oh, I’ll tell you exactly why you should listen to me!”
Now, compare this list/writing to whatever bio you use professionally. Now, ask yourself why they don’t match, what you really aim to accomplish with it, and what your bio is really for. Adjust accordingly.
