Self-discipline is only part of the thing
To super-charge it, we need tow other important things
For self-discipline to work well it has to be coupled with care and purpose. It’s not enough to decide to, say, eat more vegetables because (insert mean-to-yourself reason here); you have to be clear that you love yourself enough to care for yourself well and in the ways that work for you, and care enough to learn a thing or two about experimenting with preparing said vegetables properly and to your liking.
Our writing practice is no different. You might, in fact, get writing done if you are mean to yourself and berate yourself into sitting down to do the work every day, but more effective and sustainable is the approach that is clear on why you’re doing it and clear on how it is done with care (e.g., caring for yourself physically by taking breaks to stretch and look away from your screen, or by letting yourself have a catharsis in your writing if you want to wade into the muck, etc.)
Today, write about your self-discipline around writing, or your goal of it, or about any other way in which self-discipline comes up in your life. Let’s go.
Also, in case this is a big lift today, here’s a puppy.
