Today, take some loose paper that you don’t mind shredding or burning later, and write about a thing that crosses your mind once in a while that feels entirely too taboo to write about. Maybe there’s part of your sexuality you haven’t fully named to yourself or your partner, maybe you have harmful thoughts when you feel depressed for which you’re afraid of being judged, maybe deep down you think you kid’s a dick or your spouse is an idiot, or maybe you just want to slap the shit out of your sexist boss or racist uncle or whatever.
This is your green light to explore that and write about it until your heart is content. Writing this out on loose paper you know you’re about to destroy helps build in a little extra wall of psychological safety so you can better let it out.
Write deeply and honestly about not only the thing, but about why the thing feels taboo to you, about what might happen if you were to reveal it, and about the cost of keeping it to yourself.
Then, destroy the paper. Burn it on the grill! Put it in the shredder! Rip it to shreds and finish the job with scissors! Or, maybe you decide you want to keep it and think about it a while or maybe you want to use that clarity to have some big conversations. That part is up to you. Let’s go.
