Write about a natural disaster in relation to yourself. Yes, make it totally about you and/or your work or lived experience. Meaning, write about an experience you had against the backdrop of a natural disaster, write about a natural disaster you recall watching from afar (and why you recall it), or, an “I remember where I was when…” sort of deal. You know the story. Go get it.
Now, see if you can connect it to something topical. For example, maybe you had a profound experience or realization during, say, Hurricane Katrina, about climate and that informs something you do differently now. Or, maybe a tornado hit your hometown years after you moved away and you could write about how that mentally took you back. Or, you could write the story of, say, your vacation or wedding or whatever that turned out to be an unforgettable experience because an earthquake hit. The idea is not to write about the disaster, but to include it in a story about you.
