Connect whatever it is you usually write about (or your area of expertise) to a socio-political topic and write at least 500 words about it once you find the connection.

It might take some careful consideration and Googling to figure out where the things connect, but keep looking until you find it.

This practice, once you work it out, can help you to always find a way to make your knowledge relevant in the public conversation in a given moment: connect what you know to an aspect of a topic currently in the news, and you always have a reason to pitch an editor. Boom.
