Travelogue + news = thing to write

(This is a technique for adding layers, obvs)

This one might take some mental gymnastics, but today, write a travelogue about a place you have visited before, and write until you connect your narrative about the place to a current event, whether a large and known public, news-y thing or to something currently happening in your life.

If it’s helpful, begin by writing a list of places you’ve visited that you actually want to write about, then start listing themes of that visit next to each and see if any of those themes connect with current events. Pick one to write about now and save the rest to your main ideas file for another time.
