A common pitfall of writing memoir is info overcrowding. Whether a full manuscript or a shorter essay-type deal, this happens a lottttttt, when writers include entirely too much stuff into the story and things get crowded and murky. Remember: a memoir isn’t an autobiography, or the whole story of your life. A memoir is just one sample of a specific part of your life. So, while it might be tempting to add in a lot of details about your life, ruthlessly edit to include only what’s relevant to this story you are trying to tell.
But, a great first step to that might be to figure out exactly what story you’re trying to tell the most. Once you have that, you can test out subsequent sections of writing by asking yourself, “does this part drive the story forward— that one story I’m trying to tell— or, is this better saved for my autobiography?”
