When you find yourself wanting to write about a topic but also feeling overwhelmed by it, commit to only writing one sentence per day on the matter.
Once you write one sentence, you can obviously keep going if you feel like you’re in it and off to the races, but the point is that you can write about hard things, overwhelming and frustrating things, while also acknowledging the emotional and mental labor of writing about it might be too much.
We’ve all experienced the scenario in which rather than writing about something that feels like a monstrosity of a thing, we simply put it off and put it off and then suddenly months or years have gone by and we haven’t written a thing about it. One way out of that is to just this: write your one sentence and then walk away and set a reminder for yourself to add another sentence tomorrow.
Give it a try and see how well you can chip away at a big topic that seems otherwise too exhausting to even think about tackling.
