Set a timer and write without stopping for at least 15 minutes with the prompt: what now?
That could be referring to anything from a clogged drain in your bathroom to a local election result to getting a new pet to going on a date or even just going on a walk. It doesn’t have to be high-stakes at all, but also it can be as high-stakes as you’d like for ti to be. Whatever comes up, however it calls to you, zero in on that, and write it out and capture everything.
And, remember, when doing a free write, it’s important to write without stopping, because (a) the moment you stop is the moment the inner editor/critic kicks in and the writing strops, and (b) by continually writing, you allow yourself to capture the full flow of ideas you have going on, not just what your inner critic thinks should be on the page.
Because, also don’t forget that the writing process and the editing process are two different things, and usually best not done simultaneously.
