I often unnerve people by saying “in case I get hit by a bus” but also, I am a person who doesn’t tend to mince words, and who likes to have their bases covered and who is not a fan of things going unsaid. When I jumped out of an airplane a handful of years ago, you bet your ass I left a letter or two behind of the “in case I don’t make it” ilk.
So today, write, to just one or two particular people, what you would want them to know if something were to happen to you unexpectedly. It’s not about the morbid part of you no longer being among the living, but about what you would want them to know when it would be your last chance to tell them.
Before you balk, look, first of all, I was absolutely goth in high school, but also I believe our Western cultural attitudes about death absolutely suck for having made this a taboo topic and for getting folks who mention it called “negative” but until further notice, we’re all gonna go out somehow, so we might as well write a little something something to leave for folks who mean the most to us.
HOWEVER, if this even represents the faintest possibility of temptation for you around self-harm, I beg you to skip it and write something else today. Fuck it. You’re valuable and worth protecting, and this is but one prompt.
