If I hear one more writer complaining they they would write if only they had something to write about, I’ll definitely scream because ideas, my dudes, are a thing in infinite supply. Maybe you just need a better way to access them? Yes? Right. Okay. Let’s go.
Idea generation methods for you that I swear by:
Set a timer and list everything that enters your mind for 3 minutes without stopping, then pick one and write about it
List 100 of the worst ideas you can think of in terms of writing topics
Go to Answer the Public and type in a word related to a thing you know about/often write about, hit “search” and feast thy eyes on a treasure trove of ideas
Ditto in Google News: enter a word you know a good bit about and search specifically in Google News and see if you get a bridge to a new aspect of the topic
Look at the big picture stuff you’ve already written about and zero in on a tiny detail and write about that (or go the opposite way and zoom way out on something you’ve already written about)
Pick a thing a lot of people are talking/writing/tweeting about and figure out what’s not yet being said about that thing and write about that
Write a list of every time you won big (or failed miserably) and what you learned each time
Write a list of things you know how to do, then pick one and write about it
…and then, create a big list with all the ideas you just generated, save it and keep adding to it anytime an idea strikes you, even if you aren’t sure about the feasibility of the idea. Get in the habit of capturing ideas and building your idea bank and you’ll always have an idea ready for the taking.
