Today, take a fresh page (paper or digital) and make a list of all the topics you’d be curious to write about if there were absolutely zero consequences for writing about it. Maybe there’s a manifesto about shitty corporate culture that you haven’t written bc you’d risk getting fired, maybe you want to write about your kink and are afraid fo being judged, or maybe you want to write a strongly worded political piece you fear would get blowback you don’t want.
Anyway maybe your list.
Then, next to each, write what consequences you think you might face if you did write that piece.
And, next to each imagined future consequence, I want you to do another thing: consider them “considerations” more than consequences, simply because they are, in fact, not guaranteed. We can be pretty sure a thing might happen as a result, but it’s not a given. It’s just not. So, next to each consideration, list out a couple of strategies you might do to preempt that from happening, that you might do if that consequence were to happen, and what other thing might actually happen instead. Let’s try.
