All November, we’re focusing not only on non-fiction writing prompts but also on your writing output and career.
Imagine you’re going to be on a talk show to talk about your work as a writer. Or, that you’re going to be interviewed for a print publication. What is the main thing a journalist, broadcast/podcast host, needs to know about your work and about you as an artist? What’s your vibe? Your focus? Your areas of expertise? Your north star? Get all of it down on the page.
Write long and edit/tighten it up later. Write deeply into this and stay with it.
It might be tempting to bang out this answer like it’s an assignment, but try to approach this more as an exercise of self-care or development. And, it might be tempting to skip it because you believe you already know the answer. Do it anyway. Try it Because what you think the answer is or what the answer was a year ago may not be true now or maybe there is a thematic epiphany waiting for you once you dig into it.
Once you work through this, hang onto it. You can very easily turn this writing into an artist’s statement for applying for grants, use it to frame out a one-sheeter or website landing page about you as a podcast guest or as a keynote speaker. Or, you can just have it to have it and decide what it’s for later. The important part is to do it. Let’s write. I believe in you.
Or, fuck it. Paint your face if you want, too.
