All November, we’re focusing on non-fiction writing prompts per usual but through the frame of also taking a good, long look at your writing life and overall creative career things you want to do.
Consider the broader ecosystem in which your creative work exists. Consider the various forces that could influence the visibility of your creative work such as economic conditions, industry trends, standard-bearer institutions, and so on. How does your work intersect with or challenge these forces?
Consider common narratives about these forces and then consider what if those narratives were not true, or didn’t have to be true. What might that look like? For example, if there’s a narrative that you have to have a large, traditional publisher in order to be successful and that is something you find yourself feeling meh about or daunted by, what might it look like if that were no longer true in your mind or if there was simply another path? Writing deeply into all of this today. Let’s go.
