Who says what art is unserious?
I'm not saying all of it is serious, only that we should think deeply about who decides
There’s a pattern in what gets dismissed as “not serious”: pop culture, women’s writing, memoir, aesthetics, style, community care. Whole genres and modes of thinking on your radar are discarded as unserious simply because they aren’t legible to the dominant culture. But unserious to whom? And why?
Today, write about something you were told “isn’t serious” but that’s shaped your worldview, your creative practice, or your politics significantly anyway.
You might write about a joke that changed how you saw power. A bit of gossip that revealed a hidden system. A color or sound or phrase you’ve followed like a breadcrumb trail. Whatever it is: take it absolutely seriously now and write into it.
