When you find yourself wanting to write about a topic but also feeling overwhelmed by it, commit to only writing one sentence per day on the matter. Today, for example, you could write something like, “Folks who are able to get vaccinated but who have not done so by now are, to put it mildly, distressing as hell.” Well, looky-there, you have something approaching a topic sentence. You can keep going if you feel like you’re in it and off to the races, but the point is that you can write about hard things and frustrating things, while also acknowledging the emotional and mental labor of writing about it might be too much. And, the way out of that, friends, can be to write your one sentence and then walk away and set a reminder for yourself to add another sentence tomorrow. Give it a try and see how well you can chip away at a big topic that seems otherwise exhausting to even think about tackling.
